UKAS, ANAB or a local accreditation body?
No EU law requires an accredited ISO/IEC 42001 certificate. The buyer decides which accreditation it accepts. Most of Europe has no local option yet, so foreign marks are normal.
Registries checked 2026-11-03.
How to read the mark as a buyer
- Find the legal entity and the mark on the certificate.
- Check that the registry lists that entity for 42001: certificate check.
- Decide which accreditation bodies you accept. Write it into your supplier requirements.
- Expect change. Suppliers may move when your local body starts to accredit 42001.
Why a German company may hold a UKAS certificate
DAkkS, COFRAC, Swedac, PCA and 17 other European registries list no 42001 certification body. Companies there must use a body accredited elsewhere.
An EU certification body normally uses its own country's accreditation body. Regulation (EC) 765/2008, Art. 7, allows another one when the national body has none, does not accredit that activity, or has not passed peer evaluation for it. The second case applies to 42001 in most of Europe today.
Recognition for 42001 specifically
The European co-operation for Accreditation (EA) made ISO/IEC 42006 mandatory for this accreditation on 2025-11-20. Up to 2026-11-03, no EA or Global ACI document lists 42001 inside the recognition agreements. Ask the accreditation body whether its 42001 accreditation is covered.
What each accreditation body says about certification bodies from other countries
| Accreditation body | 42001 status | Rule for certification bodies from other countries |
|---|---|---|
| ACCREDIA IT | 6 listed | ACCREDIA can accredit a certification body in another country when the local accreditation body does not offer that accreditation. ACCREDIA then informs the local body. |
| UKAS GB | 5 listed | UKAS does not normally accredit a certification body with a head office in another European country. It asks for a letter from that country's accreditation body first. |
| RvA NL | 3 listed | RvA accredits a certification body from another EA country only in the 3 cases of Regulation (EC) 765/2008, Article 7. It asks for written proof from the home accreditation body. |
| COFRAC FR | none listed | COFRAC accepts applications from certification bodies abroad only under the conditions of EA-2/13 and Regulation (EC) 765/2008. |
| DAkkS DE | none listed | DAkkS acts for certification bodies in other EU or EEA countries only in exceptional cases, under Regulation (EC) 765/2008 and EA-2/13. |

Accredited only outside Europe
19 brands hold 42001 accreditation only through ANAB (US), among them DEKRA, DQS, SGS, TÜV Rheinland. Their European entities are not listed for 42001.
An ANAB certificate from the US entity can be a sound choice. Check that the entity on your certificate is that US entity, and that your customers accept ANAB.
